Pain and Pleasure

pain-and-pleasureIt’s a fact. We humans will do more to avoid pain than to seek pleasure. I’m talking about pain of any kind.

For the sake of this discussion I’m going to talk about the pain that people avoid when it comes to health.

For over 35 years I’ve been helping people reach their potential with my martial arts and exercise programs.

It’s been a learning experience to say the least.

One of the things that has peaked my curiosity and gotten me searching for answers in what makes people avoid the things that would be the most beneficial for them.

Even though I’m going to ask questions about health and fitness these same rules apply to anything in a person’s life.

This is something that you will want to pay close attention to.

Back to the health and fitness arena.

What stops people from getting healthier and fitter?Health_decisions

It’s simple…

A person may know that they should eat healthier, exercise regularly, and stop smoking. Ask anyone and they will tell you that they know this and it makes perfect sense.

So why is it that people still make bad decisions, decisions that can affect their health in a very negative way?

The answer…

People are afraid of the PAIN.

Is the pain of doing something to help yourself get healthier greater than the knowledge that you might be killing yourself if you don’t do something?

Actually it is, as strange as it may sound.

Let’s take an example.

A person is 40 lbs overweight, has poor energy level, doesn’t sleep well at night, has high blood pressure and high cholesterol, hates seeing their own reflection in the mirror, and is generally unhappy with their existence.

It sounds as if that person has some terribly important reasons to start taking better care of their health.

So what’s stopping them?

Putting it in the simplest terms possible the incredible pain that this person is experiencing both physically and mentally is not enough to get him/her to seek help and begin a program.

Here’s why…

This same person knows that eating healthier can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Exercise can make your body hurt and it can make you feel out of place and awkward if you are starting something new. Where do you go and who do you ask for help? Starting anything new can cause fear, anxiety, and frustration.

So in the end this person chooses to not do anything about their health because it’s easier and more comfortable to follow the path that they are on and not make any changes.health_change

I’m not judging and I’m not scolding anyone. I’m simply saying that many of us could live happier and more fulfilled lives if we learn how to handle pain in a more effective manner.

If you’ve been wanting to make a positive change in your life and you just didn’t know where to turn or how to start, let me suggest some options to you.
